Companies in social media analysis reported taking in over $420 million in new investments in 2014, down from last year's $465 million (both totals exclude the value of investments whose value was unannounced). Here's a recap of the year's investment activity.

SeaChange International (NASDAQ: SEAC), the developer of software platforms for the television and multiscreen video markets, announced that it has agreed to acquire Timeline Labs in a cash and stock deal worth up to $24.5 million. Timeline has developed social media analysis tools for the media industry, finding and curating online content and delivering visualizations for on-air and online use.

All Timeline Labs employees will join SeaChange as part of the transaction. The companies were already collaborating on NewCoin, a new venture being developed with FOX, Tribune Media and Univision to improve local TV audience measurement.

Brandwatch Acquires PeerIndex

Brandwatch announced that it has acquired PeerIndex for its strengths in influencer analytics and mapping. The ten employees of PeerIndex join Brandwatch to integrate their technologies and develop new products, and its office gives Brandwatch a presence in central London.

Details of the cash and equity deal were not disclosed. This is the first acquisition for Brandwatch, which raised $22 million earlier this year.

TrackMaven Raises $14 Million

TrackMaven announced that it has received $14 million in a series B investment round led by New Enterprise Associates. Bowery Capital and Silicon Valley Bank also participated. The company plans to grow its product development, sales, marketing, and customer success teams.

Ushahidi announced the end of support and development on SwiftRiver, its real-time Internet monitoring and analysis platform, effective January 5, 2015. The SwiftRiver code will be open-sourced and publicly available via github.

KPMG Capital announced that it has taken an unspecified "substantial equity stake" in Bottlenose and licensed Bottlenose Nerve Center for use by KPMG member firms.

KPMG acquired WiseWindow in 2012.
