IBM Buys SPSS for $1.2 Billion

IBM (NYSE: IBM) and analytics provider SPSS (Nasdaq: SPSS) have announced a merger agreement in which IBM will acquire SPSS for $50 per share, or approximately $1.2 billion. The acquisition follows IBM's April announcement of a new consulting practice focused on business analytics.

SPSS offers a text analytics workbench, PASW Text Analytics (formerly Clementine), that operates within the company's data mining environment. While focused on internal company data, it supports RSS feeds to provide an entry into social media analysis.
