newBrandAnalytics announced Pulse, an analytics and alerting module for its social media intelligence platform. Building on its initial emphasis on analysis of customer reviews linked to client locations and service-specific operational feedback, nBA says Pulse gives clients a broader view of brand impact across social media.

NeedTagger Apps Going Dark

NeedTagger announced that its applications will be unavailable after midnight EDT tonight, following the company's difficulties with access to Twitter data. In a post on the company blog, NeedTagger founder/CEO Vernon Niven referred customers to competing services.

While its social lead generation applications on HootSuite and the web are going offline, NeedTagger plans to continue access to its Social Signals API and a limited application for testing.

Mu Sigma Acquires Webfluenz

Webfluenz announced that it has been acquired by the decision sciences generalist firm Mu Sigma.

Coosto introduced Coosto Open, a free version of its social media analysis platform. The free version includes search, plus metrics for volume, sentiment, sources and impressions. Other metrics are reserved for paid accounts.

Talkwalker introduced a free version of its social media analysis platform, including search, data filters, and charts with drilldown capability. The free edition is limited to a 7-day historical view and promotes a free trial of Talkwalker Pro.

Socialbakers announced that it has acquired Applum, a specialist developer of analytics tools for Facebook. Best known for its EdgeRank Checker product, the company also developed PostAcumen and ShareGrab. This is Socialbakers' second acquisition since its $26 million investment round in February.

Socialbakers described the acquisition as helping it toward its top two priorities: solidifying its presence in the US market and offering brands new levels of social media insight. EdgeRank Checker will remain available as a self-serve product, and it will be integrated into a future release of Socialbakers Analytics.

In an email to EdgeRank Checker users, Applum said that users had already been transferred to Socialbakers system, and no service disruptions were expected. Applum's Chicago-based team will join Socialbakers, giving the company its first development presence in the US.

New Papers, 10 June 2014

Ushahidi announced the opening of the public beta of CrisisNET, a platform that provides access to crisis data from social media and other sources. The service is designed to reduce the time and effort required to extract and analyze data during a crisis, helping journalists, researchers, and decision makers. CrisisNET is free and open-source, subject to reasonable limits on usage.

CrisisNET collects data from Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, as well as from specialized sources in crisis monitoring, such as ReliefWeb. The system normalizes data formats and adds metadata fields, including automated topic tagging, geocoding, and licensing information.

New Papers, 3 June 2014

Microsoft announced the availability of Microsoft Social Listening as part of its spring batch of updates to the Dynamics CRM portfolio, originally announced in February. Microsoft Social Listening will be available as a standalone product or as part of Microsoft Dynamics CRM. SaaS accounts with a minimum of ten licensed seats will get the listening module at no additional charge.

Microsoft acquired Netbreeze for its social media analysis technology last year.
