Synthesio announced Hospitality, a social media monitoring tool for hotels. The new service is the second vertical market specialization from Synthesio, which released its SportTrack service—developed with TNS Sport—last year.

IBM (NYSE: IBM) and analytics provider SPSS (Nasdaq: SPSS) have announced a merger agreement in which IBM will acquire SPSS for $50 per share, or approximately $1.2 billion. The acquisition follows IBM's April announcement of a new consulting practice focused on business analytics.
SPSS offers a text analytics workbench, PASW Text Analytics (formerly Clementine), that operates within the company's data mining environment. While focused on internal company data, it supports RSS feeds to provide an entry into social media analysis.

Alterian plc (LON: ALN) has announced its acquisition of Techrigy. The all-stock deal is reported to be worth between $0.6 million and $4.1 million, depending on performance, plus the assumption of $0.9 million in shareholder loans. Alterian offers a marketing technology platform that brings together email, web content management, and analytics. The company has a global presence supported by office locations in eight countries.

Phase2 Technology has announced Tattler (app), an open-source social media monitoring tool based on the Drupal platform, with text analytics using Open Calais. Tattler evolved from The BuzzMonitor, which was originally developed by the World Bank and a group of development partners.
Tattler (app) is currently in testing. Phase2 plans to announce the availability of the software to a mailing list (sign up on the web site) and through Twitter (@tattlerapp).

Gnip and PostRank have announced a partnership that adds social media content and metadata from PostRank to Gnip's content aggregation service. PostRank (formerly AideRSS) collects RSS content and adds a proprietary engagement metric for ranking and filtering.

Viralheat announced the launch of their social media monitoring platform today. Priced from $10/month, the entry-level tool provides keyword search, alerts and volume-based metrics on a variety of online sources. The company offers a free, 7-day trial.

- Amaia Lasa is promoted to CEO. Lasa originally joined the company as COO in 2007.
- Co-founder and former CEO Simon McDermott moves to a new role as United Kingdom Country Manager and Chief Communication Officer.
- Principal founder Per Siljubergsåsen becomes Chief Product Officer.
- Frizo Janssens is appointed CTO.
- William Klippgen joins Attentio's board of directors. Klippgen is executive director of BAF Spectrum Pte Ltd and co-founder of Kelkoo.com.
